The Sheffield culture guide written by in-the-know locals

Joe Harris

Our Favourite Places would be nothing without our contributors — a massive thanks to all of them!

Tell us about you...
I'm Joe. I like films and vinyl.

I'm the co-founder of Reel Steel – a film magazine and screening event group, based in Sheffield. You may have been to one of our screening events at Sheffield's historic Abbeydale Picture House, where we've shown everything from cult 80s horror to Studio Ghibli on 35mm.

What does Sheffield mean to you?
Sheffield is a great example of the 'independent' spirit.

It's full of people who have gone out and done things for themselves – opening a new bar or a record store, creating a film screening or music event. The cultural landscape of the city is full of so many independent traders and events and it's all the better for it.

It really is a city of makers.

What's your favourite Sheffield place?
The Abbeydale Picture House.

What would you do to improve the city?
Let me think about that one...
