What I Heard About the World, Third Angel

Don't let the closure of Sheffield's performance venues stop you from enjoying music and theatre from the city's artists and performers. Scroll down for our roundup of theatre and music that you can enjoy online, for free, whenever and wherever, thanks to videos created by some of Sheffield's arts organisations. Please get in touch if you have any suggestions to add to this page!

What I Heard About The World – Third Angel
"The only bad thing about following Sheffield’s most forward-thinking theatre company Third Angel, is trying to keep up with them. Since 1995 they’ve been putting on performances that rarely appear in a form you’re entirely familiar with and always fill you with perspective on life that you’d never have imagined." This is how our writer Robert introduced Third Angel in our Meet the Locals interview with its artistic directors.

The company have had to cancel the remaining dates on the tour of their new show The Department Of Distractions. In the meantime, anyone with theatre-shaped holes in their diaries can enjoy their video work. See below for full-length documentation of 2012 show What I Heard About The World, produced with Sheffield Theatres and Lisbon's Teatro Maria Matos – a thought-provoking exploration of the way we engage with and tell stories in a world that seems to get bigger by the day. See their website for more.

Sir Scallywag and the Battle of Stinky Bottom – Music in the Round
Ensemble 360 is Music in the Round's resident chamber music group. Their regular home is the Crucible Studio, but in 2017 they live-streamed children's concert Sir Scallywag and the Battle of Stinky Bottom with storyteller Polly Ives from London's Wigmore Hall – and you can watch it below.

When King Colin sets his sights on finding the famous Golden Sausage, there’s only ONE person for the job: Sir Scallywag! But will the six-year-old knight be mighty enough to defeat the filthy trolls and win the Stinkiest Battle Ever?'

The concert is based on the book by Giles Andreae and Korky Paul, with music by composer Paul Rissmann. Perfect for ages 3–7. Download the accompanying resource pack for some activities to do at home.

Jean Toussaint Quartet – Sheffield Jazz
Bringing the best of national and international jazz artists to the city year round, Sheffield Jazz are a small not-for-profit with a big passion for music and over 40 years' experience to boot. Their gigs alternate between three venues: Crookes Social Club, Firth Hall, and the Crucible Studio. Enjoy a clip from their recent night at the Crucible Studio with Jean Toussaint Quartet. You'll find more from the past three years of Sheffield Jazz on the organiser's YouTube channel. And until their live shows return, they're encouraging fans to show their support to freelance musicians by buying their music, downloads and merch.
