Sheffield-based artist Paul Allender presents his recent paintings in the White Room at Yellow Arch. His paintings engage with emotions that many of us would like to avoid: sadness; loss; dread; disappointment and sometimes existential angst. There are also some pleasant feelings in there too!
Growing up in a ‘slum’ provided a backdrop of scarcity, emotional as well as financial. And a feeling that ‘just getting by’ is quite enough. Don’t try to be more than you are.
Living in London very happily for 20 years challenged this. A new identity emerged. One with a foundation of working class and poor but on top of that a creativity, playfulness, excitement, aspiration and even joy.
So, the paintings reflect that too.
Come and see his paintings for yourself at Yellow Arch studios between the 11th and 20th June, from 10.30am to 5pm every day. On the 11th there is an opening event at 7pm, on Sunday the 14th in the afternoon, Paul will play a few tunes with his band and on Thursday the 18th at 7pm, Paul will talk about his ideas behind the paintings.
And Saturday the 20th is Kelham Pride, so expect a busy, colourful, inclusive and joy-filled last day of the show.
