Dubbed “the misfits’ misfits” in John Robb’s Death To Trad Rock, The Nightingales are one of post-punk’s cult treasures. Formed in Birmingham in 1979, they were fiercely championed by John Peel and racked up a run of critically adored singles, albums and radio sessions.
Speaking of the band, Peel said “their performances will serve to confirm their excellence when we are far enough from the 80’s to look at the period rationally and other, infinitely better known bands, stand revealed as charlatans”.
With Stewart Lee’s acclaimed documentary King Rocker adding to the legend, they’re experiencing a revival late in their career. Expect sharp wit, wiry energy and outsider spirit in full force.
