Perched on a hill overlooking Sheffield from Gleadless Valley in the South West of the city, Holy Cross is a striking, distinctive and genuinely awe-inspiring modern building.
Completed in 1965, Holy Cross is constructed as a canted form reminiscent of Le Corbusier’s 1958 Philips Pavilion, with the roof flowing down from the stark white cross at its apex. The Virgin Mary and St John are featured in two full height stained glass windows that stand either side of the cross.
A proud, confident construction, Holy Cross can also be seen in the TV series This Is England ’86, produced by Sheffield-based Warp Films.
