Stocking over 400 bottles of the most unusual, experimental and outright tasty beers, the Hop Hideout is the place for drinkers looking for something out of the ordinary. Expect to find unique beers from de Molen, Mikkeller, AleSmith, Rogue and tonnes of Buxton amongst the shelves.
Operating in various locations since November 2013, Julia Gray’s Hop Hideout moved to the historic, recently redeveloped Leah's Yard in the city centre in 2024.
Hop Hideout is also responsible for organising Sheffield Beer Week each March and is one of our top 3 bottle shops in Sheffield.
We asked Julia what comes top of her lists of beers and boozers:
Top 3 local breweries/beers?
Buxton Brewery – they can’t seem to put a foot wrong. From their dry hopped Berliner Weisse Far Skyline to collaborations with Arizona Wilderness and Evil Twin. Magic Rock – does anything need to be said here? The beer speaks for itself. Great Heck – love the dark beers including black IPA, Black Jesus.
Favourite ‘special’ beer?
The Kernel – London Sour Raspberry. Last time I enjoyed this beer was at Copenhagen Beer Celebration and it and reminded me how beer could be so intensely full of flavour, tart and tasty.
Favourite Sheffield pub?
Many! Sheffield has such a diverse range of beer spots from classic pubs with great beer selections such at the Rutland, Shakespeares and The Broadfield, to late night music drenched boozers like the Picture House Social and beautiful heritage pubs like the Bath Hotel. They’re all my favourite.
