The Sheffield culture guide written by in-the-know locals

Jöro

Jöro, 294 Shalesmoor, S3 8US

Open Thursday-Saturday 12-3pm, Wednesday-Saturday 5:30-10pm

Sheffield has always had a rich and vibrant culinary scene, though for those very special occasions you can often find yourself heading a little further afield to find the kind of fine dining worth saving up for. Yet tucked away in a shipping container in Shalesmoor are now some the country’s best chefs, cooking up plate after plate of fresh, modern and inventive food that celebrates the beauty of the countryside that sits on our doorstep.

Though only open since late 2016, Jöro is already the proud recipient of a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin inspectors, three AA rosettes and rave reviews from the likes of Felicity Cloake at the Guardian. Could Jöro be on the path to gaining a new Michelin Star for the city? We think so.

Expect seasonal, Yorkshire-sourced ingredients, simply showcased and precisely prepared, often with an international twist. Jöro specialises in several servings of small plates, each carefully arranged and lovingly presented by knowledgeable staff. It’s up to you how much or how little you order, though don’t get too attached to your favourite dish – the menu changes frequently to reflect seasonality and to highlight the very best produce.

The decor is Scandinavian-influenced simplicity (Jöro is pronounced "yoro" and is the Old Norse word for earth), creating a cosy and welcoming interior that you’d be forgiven for not expecting from the foreboding exterior and main road view.

To accompany a daily changing food menu, the wine menu offers exceptional, organic and bio-dynamic pairings from internationally renowned and award winning vineyards. Select a bottle yourself or go for matching glasses to accompany your food. You may need to ask for more bread though – the pourings are very generous!
