When you spot Spinning Discs in Meersbrook, framed with twinkling lights, follow your instincts and take a peek inside. It may be a Thursday evening, but strolling right on by is exactly what you should not do.
Since opening the record shop in April 2015, owner Martin Black has lovingly created an open and atmospheric space for customers to browse without the (sometimes overwhelming) pressure to buy. Passion is the driving force behind Spinning Discs – passion for music, passion for vinyl (the shop even offers a vinyl cleaning service) and also passion for Sheffield. Spinning Discs is a proud part of Sheffield Antiques Quarter's so-called Vinyl Triangle, alongside Abbeydale Road's Fear of Music and Below, and there's a heartwarming solidarity among the independent businesses in the area that makes the pilgrimage out to Chesterfield Road well worth it. Black is committed to offering customers a unique experience, with after-work opening hours and events like 'Brew and Browse' nights and the regular Pick 'n' Mix Jukebox collaboration with friends at the excellent Tram Shed bar next door (which, incidentally, is also next door to the brilliant Bhaji Shop and Thali Cafe). Whether you're after a specific record to complete your collection or are simply looking for a pleasant way to spend an evening, Spinning Discs' eclectic mix of genres and constant turnover of records – predominantly new and reissues, with some select second-hand items – should keep you satisfied. The shop has a great egalitarian vibe, too, with local bands placed on the racks alongside longestablished household names like Cat Stevens and David Bowie.
Expect exciting things from Spinning Discs in the coming months. The shop will be taking part in Record Store Day on 16 April (more news on that soon) and there are plans to expand its rear quarters, as well continuing to grow its online trade on Discogs. In the meantime, while away an end-of-week evening or a Saturday afternoon with a filter coffee and a good browse at the Chesterfield Road shop.
