The Art House is a multi-purpose space operated by St Matthew's Church, slightly hidden away just off busy Division Street. The creative hub is adjacent to the church – but what The Art House does goes far beyond the simple craft-based project of a local church.
The place itself is all bright and new, with studios, galleries and workshop rooms. It's a great space for showcasing work by existing local artists, with its occasional exhibitions featuring everything from printmaking to painting and ceramics. However, it places the most emphasis on its work with members of local communities, to discover and develop new artists of any age.
The Art House seeks to provide a safe and inclusive space for "people who are normally excluded and marginalised and most unable to discover their creativity". In the past it's worked on projects with homeless people, hosted exhibitions supporting World Mental Health Week, and organised activities for children during school holidays.
Courses and workshops include pottery, life drawing, textiles and watercolour, while there's also the casual 'sip and paint' Friday evening sessions where you can take along your own bottle of wine. There are regular talks, taster sessions, and well-being groups for individuals who have mental health issues, stress or anxiety. Offering so many ways to come together and get creative, The Art House ensures that Sheffield's resources are accessible to all, helping more people discover the artist within.
