Community is at the heart of this Neepsend drinking hole, overlooking the River Don. It was bought out by over 400 regulars in 2017, becoming Sheffield's first community-owned pub. It supports local creativity through exhibitions, poetry readings and music nights. And it offers training specifically for people with learning difficulties. Spend a minute in the Gardeners' comfy pews and you too will feel welcomed into its loving arms.
For a city with five rivers, Sheffield punches below its weight when it comes to waterside drinking spots, and perhaps with good reason – Neepsend’s Gardeners Rest was hit hard in the floods of 2007. But it’s come back stronger than ever.
The pub is the tap for the local Sheffield Brewery, so is the best place to sup a pint of Five Rivers pale ale or Sheffield Porter. It's one of just two places (that we know of) in Sheffield with a bar billiards table, if you know how to play. And its fairytale maze of a garden is something truly special, earning it a place in our top 3 Sheffield beer gardens. Between tables you’ll find old industrial relics repurposed as plant pots, fireplaces for when it gets chilly, beautiful stained glass panels and giant flower-shaped lamps like something from Alice In Wonderland. The Gardeners is also an ideal gateway to a trail round the pubs of historic Kelham Island.
