The Sheffield culture guide written by in-the-know locals

William Mitchell mural

Barkers Pool House, Burgess Street, S1 2HF

Tucked away down a side street right in the centre of the city, fans of modernism will be pleased to discover another fine example of those concrete structures that Sheffield does so well.

Opposite the entrance to the John Lewis car park, on the side of Barker's Pool House, is a superb piece of abstract public art, formed from ten cast concrete panels. The untitled piece has been here, in the shadow of the department store and barely noticed, since 1972. It's the work of prominent post-war architectural sculptor and some-time Tomorrow’s World presenter William Mitchell, who went on to design the famous Egyptian hall and escalator at Harrods for his pal Mohamed Al-Fayed.

The mural is one of our top 3 Sheffield artworks. While you're there, look down the street for another hidden curiosity: the colourful, incongruous and long-closed Athol Hotel.
